An estimated 500 million people are at risk of poverty due to the Coronavirus

The economic impact of the Coronavirus threatens to plunge more than 500 million people into poverty unless countries take steps to cushion the blow, according to a report by the NGO Oxfam.

Walmart, Cencosud and SMU fined $21 million for collusion in chicken sales

A $21 million fine is to be paid jointly by the Walmart, Cencosud and SMU supermarket chains after the Supreme Court doubled the punishment imposed by the TDLC on those firms for collusion in the sale of chickens.

Inflation in March was 0.3% and the year-on-year rate was 3.7%

Prices rose 0.3% in March in Chile, mainly due to education, food and non-alcoholic beverages, in a month marked by the arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic, bringing the year's inflation rate to 1.4% and the year-on-year rate to 3.7%.

Codelco says copper production, sales meeting targets despite Coronavirus

Codelco states that its production continues in line with its plans despite the measures it has implemented to stave off the spread of coronavirus at its sites. The company says that it had met 100% of its sales targets.

Piñera announces new $2 billion fund to benefit informal workers

Chilean president Sebastian Piñera announced a new $2 billion fund, to help support the country's informal workers as COVID-19 continues to batter the nation's economy. Chile's government had already announced a nearly $12 billion stimulus package, worth nearly 5% of gross domestic product, aimed at saving jobs and protecting small businesses.
