Imacec suffers a decrease of 14.1% and market projections for May

A historical drop of 14.1% was registered by the Monthly Economic Activity Indicator (Imacec) in April 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. This figure was well below what the market estimated, which was an 11% decrease. The sector now projects that for May, figures will be similar or even worse than April's and also projects that 2020's GDP could decline to 8%.

Tourist accommodation survey: Overnight stays in Chile fell 91.5% in April

According to the Monthly Survey of Tourist Accommodation carried out by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in April 150,924 overnight stays were registered in Chile, decreasing by 91.5% compared to the same period last year. The highest level of overnight stays was registered in the Antofagasta Region (32,570), with a decline of 77.1% compared to April 2019, followed by the Metropolitan Region (21,644), which presented a difference of -96.6%.

New car sales drop by 72.2% in May

In May, new car sales registered their lowest level since 2009 with only 8,681 units sold, decreasing by 72.2% compared to the same period in 2019. In April, new car sales also dropped by 72.8% compared to the same period last year, with only 8,906 units sold. The number of cars sold in May were even lower than April, reaching the lowest level since February 2009, when 8,108 vehicles were sold.

Government meets with electricity companies and SEC regarding billing claims

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face reading of meters has been altered. Thus, the distribution companies began to apply provisional billing processes since March but this measure has generated a series of complaints among customers. As a result, the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels (SEC) and the Minister of Energy, Francisco López met with the distributors remotely and announced a new operation that responds to these specific queries.
