Chile's economic activity plunged 11.3% in August from the same month a year earlier. According to the Central Bank, deeper than forecasts of an 8.5% drop as Chile grapples to recover from COVID-19. The country’s IMACEC economic activity index , which encompasses about 90% of the economy tallied in gross domestic product figures, was up 2.8% in August.
Mainstream Renewable Power has placed an order for 109 MW for the Ckani wind farm, located in the Antofagasta region, Chile. The contract includes the supply and installation of 26 V150-4.2 MW wind turbines, in addition to an Active Output Management 5000 contract for the operation and maintenance of the wind farm for the next 20 years. The Ckani wind farm is expected to enter commercial operation in 2021.
Chile’s telecommunications regulator Subtel has decided to postpone its 5G spectrum auction until next month following the responses received in the consultation launched in August. The regulator said it intends to make some amendments to the conditions of the auction in the coming days, meaning the opening day for bids has been delayed until 12 November, around 1 month later than initially scheduled.
According to ProChile, in 2019 Chilean avocado exports registered their highest value in recent years. The value of avocado exports has increased by 76% in just one decade, increasing from $170.7 million in 2009 to $300.7 million in 2019. China was the main buyer of avocados in Asia. In 2019, China accounted for 8.3% of shipments, followed by Japan, whose shipments increased by 1,735% compared to the previous year. So far in 2020, China continues to lead imports, concentrating 8.8% of Chilean avocado sales and opening the way to other important Asian destinations.
For the first time, China has exported 40 tons of kiwi to Chile. The kiwis, grown in an orchard in Mei County (Shaanxi Province), were recently shipped to Chile in refrigerated containers. The journey from China to Santiago and other Chilean cities lasted 40 days.
