Chilean telecommunications watchdog Subtel announced a search for partners to finance a project to lay subsea fibre optic cables to connect South America to the Asia-Pacific region. Subtel said state-owned company Desarrollo Pais will take charge in searching of financiers for the project. Construction is expected to begin in 2022 with an estimated 13,180km of cable needed to be laid.

Teck Resources is continuing to increase its workforce at the Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 (QB2) copper project in northern Chile and expects the project to be about 40% complete by the end of the year, according to the company. The project, which has been delayed by up to six months after being suspended due to COVID-19, expects to see first production in the second half of 2022.
Fruta Cloud is the first importer to bring air-freighted Chilean cherries to the Chinese market this year. The cherries arrived at Pudong Airport in Shanghai on October 24th. This marked the official beginning of the 2020-2021 Chilean cherry season. Data shows that the Chilean cherry export volume reached 230 thousand tons in the 2019-2020 Chilean cherry season. That is an increase of 27% in comparison with the same period in the previous year.
Traces of infectious salmon anemia (ISA) have been detected at a Chilean salmon farm owned by Cultivos Yadran. The Melchor 719 farm in the Aysen region of southern Chile was found to be carrying the virus during a routine inspection by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, according to a notice from Sernapesca. Officials at Sernapesca are currently awaiting the results of a re-sampling carried out on Oct. 25 before it decides how to proceed.
