Chile’s Central Bank forecast that the economy of the world’s top copper producer would decrease by 5.75% to 6.25% in 2020. However, the Central Bank said in its Ipom quarterly economic report that gross domestic product (GDP) would rebound between 5.5% and 6.5% in 2021, a stronger recovery than it had initially expected. The more favorable scenario next year will be bolstered by a higher copper price of $3.20 per pound in 2021, the bank predicted.

Tecam has announced its new environmental technology project for emissions treatment in Chile. Tecam will supply a hydrocarbon tank storage company in Chile with the engineering, procurement, installation and maintenance service of a regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO) system for the elimination of the gas venting emissions generated at the tank farm. With this project, the company will be able to eliminate 99.9% of its polluting emissions by using an environmentally-friendly exhaust gas cleaning system.

The Minera Esperanza union, one of the unions in contract negotiations with Antofagasta Minerals at its Centinela mine, has reached an agreement with the Chilean miner. Meanwhile, another of the mine’s unions, the Centinela District union, continues to negotiate with Antofagasta which could lead to a strike.
