The Chilean government received a second shipment of nearly 2 million vaccines developed by Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech on Sunday, which will be used to begin the mass vaccination in Chile, scheduled to start on Wednesday. This will allow 4 million Chileans to be vaccinated, according to the Chilean Deputy Health Minister Paula Daza.
Projections by the Undersecretariat of Tourism and the National Tourism Service for the current summer season (December 2020 to March 2021) indicate that about 4.95 million overnight trips will be made. That is 45.3% less, compared to the same period last year. It is projected that 284,000 international tourists will arrive in Chile, which is 81.1% lower than the 1,508,225 visitors from abroad who arrived in the country last summer.
Chile’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported that the country’s Mining Production Index fell by 9.3% in December 2020, compared to the same period in 2019. According to the INE, the fall is a consequence of reduced activity in all three sectors that make up the index, particularly in the metallic mining sector which dropped by 9.3% in December and subtracted 8.8 percentual points from the index.
B2C e-commerce grew by 55% in 2020, despite a sharp fall in services. However, according to data from the Santiago Chamber of Commerce (CCS), 2020 ended with a 3.8% fall in retail sales. The best annual performance corresponded by far to electronic products, for home equipment and technology, which accumulated a growth of 17.9%.
Fruit exporting unions are concerned about the impact that the country's frontal system has had on the plantations, reporting damage and total loss in some areas. Table grapes, canned peaches and blueberries are the most affected, according to the Chilean Exporters' Association (Asoex) and the Chilean Fruit Producers' Federation (Fedefruta).
